Barney&Berry rod

Question
QUESTION: I am in possession of I believe my Great Grandfather's or Grandfather's fly rod. It appears to be bamboo with 2 long top ends a middle and a long handle on which is written/signed the word  "Mohigan". It was wrapped in a sectioned cloth bag which is then placed inside a metal tube with screw caps at each end.  It is in perfect condition with just a small amount of wear on the "cork" handle. Don't know where to look for a date, just found the words Barney&Berry, Inc., USA and "Mohigan". In all total with one top piece it must be almost 9ft. long.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: Dorthy,
Barney & Berry rods are not uncommon. I have seen several Edwards trade rods made by Winchester for South Bend and Armax.  E.W. Edwards was a well know rod maker that both made and supervised the making of rods for the gun manufacturer , Winchester. Barney and Berry and others put their name on these rods , too.

Yours is probably a lower to mid range quality / value Edwards supervised rod. You can confirm that in the book; Playing With Fire: The Life and Fly Rods of E.W. Edwards  by Patrick C. Garner.
EW worked at Winchester for a period of time. EWs rods are valuable but not true with all Barney and Berry.

Edwards used a 4 digit number to define models , if there is such a 6000 or 7000 on your rod it makes alot of difference.

Price Book:
Antique & Collectible  Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.

Homel gives the Winchester Model 6085 fly rod 9' c.1932 , with an extra tip, 3 sections the  value of  $60, 140 and $275 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.

Luck,
Mac

QUESTION: I did not see anything that said E.W. Edwards only "Barney & Berry, Inc. and made in USA.

And what appeared to be hand signed was the word  "Mohigan"  is that the style of the rod?

My family is Wampanoag.

Thank you for getting back so fast!  I now figure that it must have belonged to my Grandfather and not my Great Grandfather, Capt. Jim.

Answer
Dorothy or Capt. Jim?

Nope , you are not going to see E.W. Edwards on the rod, but your rod was made at Winchester.
Mohigan was something Barney & Berry added and no one has kept any history on it.
I assume you did not find a 4 digit number anywhere on the rod and so my answer above still stands.
