JC Higgins Fly Rod Model#2940

Question
Hello:

I found my Dad's old fly rod.  I am really not interested in the value, just trying to find out some information about the rod itself, where it was made, what is the material, etc.  It is something I would never part with.  One of the best memories I have of my Dad is watching him use this rod so masterfully.  To me it was like watching a movie, so skilled, patient and successful with the rod.  I was just interested in the history of the rod.  Whatever info you could give would be greatly appreciated.

Rod is a two piece, mahogany in color (looks like bamboo). The reel area looks like a green metal, the handle looks like cork.  It was is a canvas bag in a silver colored metal tube.

Thanks for any info you can give!

JC Higgins is Sears trade name for fishing tackle they sold. Sears did not make fishing takle, other companies made it for Sears. If your rod is bamboo, it was most likely made by Horrocks Ibbotson - but it can be hard to tell since its under JC Higgins brand.

Bamboo phased out in the late 40s, 50s as fiberglass was developed. If its bamboo it should have a hexagonal shape. If its round, then its most likely fiberglass.

These items are mildly collectable since they were in the lower price range and higher volume.

Bob
