Line weight

Question
I just purchased a Heddon Beaverkill bamboo fly rod that is missing most of the original decal, and am trying to determine the line weight to use for this rod, It 8.5 ft 3/1. As I recall from my misspent youth most of these rods were 6/7 weight. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Daniel,

As far as I know Heddon did not make a Beaverkill model fly rod; nor did they use decals on their rods.  Horrocks-Ibbotson did make a Beaverkill model and did use declas on their fly rods. Is it possible you have an H-I rod instead of a Heddon?

The rod should also have two tip sections to be a complete rod.

Yes, based on my equally misspent youth, I agree that most of the older bamboo rods tend toward 6wt and 7wt lines.  If you have access to multiple lines, try several line sizes and see which works best for you on this rod.  If not, go with the 7wt line.

Thanks,  Joe
