selecting fly line

Question
Hi Gary, I have a redington 910 fly reel with a 78 berkley rod and i want to know what weight fly line to buy and also how much backing  will i  need for a balanced rod and reel?

Answer
Keith,
I assume you have a 9/10 reel and a 7/8 weight rod, so I will answer based on that. If my assumption is correct, your rod and reel selection is a bit off as you want to match your reel to your rod (ex., 9 weight rod and 9 weight reel, etc).

Your line selection will depend on the type of fishing you'll be doing (lake, river, or stream in freshwater). Saltwater will be somewhat different.

Generally, you can start with 250 yards of 20 lb backing for your reel. I would recommend you start with an 8 weight, weight forward (WF) floating line. A WF line line will allow you to cast easier than other styles of line.

If you will be fishing bigger water or where there will be consistently strong winds, you could try and upsize to a 9 weight line however the rod may not be stiff enough to support the larger line.

I hope this helps,
Gary
