Fly Tying Feathers: Types, Quality & Best Materials
Question
Gary, what kind of bird feathers are typically used to tie flies?
Answer
There are many kinds of feathers and material that can be used for tying flies. The main factor to consider when purchasing feathers is quality.
For instance, you can purchase inexpensive materials at craft stores such as Michael's but using them will not give you favorable results.
The most common feathers I would say are hackle feathers which are used in a number of patterns from dries to nymphs. Hackle gives the illusion of wings or legs.
I would recommend picking up a fly tying book or magazine as you will get a lot of ideas for using different materials.
I hope this helps...
Thanks,
Gary
