Question
Is there any benefit to an outboard motor over an inboard/outboard for use in salt water?

Answer
I am not a mechanic but I have had my share of Boat issues with my motor. Typically an inboard motor can be a little more expensive when it comes to maintenance due to the compact enclosures. But I have not heard real strong arguments either way on the reliability of either. I prefer an outboard due to the fact of maintenance and the ability of having everything contained in one casing. The ability to clean the motor and to work on it is helpful when it is fully exposed. I am sorry that I cannot provide more input on the motors themselves. I Have an outboard on mine and have been very happy with the reliability and the ease of work maintaining it. I would suggest talking with other owners and get their thoughts on the subject and why they think that way.
I have a Mercury 200 E.F.I. Satwater and I have maintenance done on it every year and flush it out after every saltwater outing. All motors should be flushed after saltwater use. The worst thing about Saltwater fishing is the Saltwater. If you haven't heard that then you will understand after a year or two why it is because of the way your equipment needs to be replaced almost every two year due to corrosion. Trailers, Wheels, Brakes, bearings, Rods reels, Line. Try not to back your vehicle into the water either because your rear brakes will be submerged.
All these little things will help.
