wrist lag while arms relaxed?

Question
Hi Dathaeous,
While continuing to learn fun things as a new golfer, I heard about the wrist lag.  I am sure that is an excellent way to increase the club speed. But just barely having managed to get better at relaxing the arms, if I attempt a wrist lag, my left arm tightens up again. Is there a good way to work on improving the wrist lag, but also keep the tension out of the arms?  Thanks.

Answer
Hello Glen apologies for the delay in response.

Actually the wrist lag is THE NUMBER ONE source of power in ALL hitting sports, like golf, tennis, baseball, etc....  It's plain physics and biomechanics.

A good way to think about it is compare yourself and the golf swing to driving a race car around a curve.  You have the entry (start of the downswing), apex (from the top of the swing to the slot), and then the exit (slot to contact point).

No great racer would accelerate the gas pedal and car into the turn on entry, that would be crazy.  Yet golfers do it all the time.  Thus at the apex, the wrist cannot hold the lag anymore due to the inertia and stress on the body parts.  When that happens, during the exit, the clubhead actually decreases because the lag has already been lost.

The desire for people to hit the ball hard without knowing HOW is the major cause.  Then some give the generic tips on "swing easier" for more power but they never explain why or how because even they dont understand.

But now you know!

Hope this helps....
