Insane shaft lengths

Question
My current setup is as follows:
Burner HT Draw driver 44.5" length
Titleist 910F 19*, 910H 24* aand 27* all -1/2" B3 Surefit setting
Louisville HL3 34* persimmon hybrid (the so-called "Billy Baroo" in the bag)
Titleist AP1 7-PW
Vokey Spin Milled c-c 50-08 (49), 54-14
Vokey SM4 60-10 (59)
White Hot 7H putter.

I traded Superfast 1.0 5-18 fairway and 4-21 hybrid for the 910F.  I had to cut the shaft lengths of these 1" and use Winn Lite DriTac grips to get them to hit properly. They hit well but with a high ball flight. What I like about my Titleist fairway and hybrids is a lower trajectory.  I also gained 10 yards by switching from a Superfast 2.0 6-27 to the 910H 27* (which is set up as 28.5*).

Now on to the subject line - I currently am "holding hostage" on a Taylor Made RocketBallz 17* fairway (my friend is buying a Superfast 6-27 from me).  I took it to the range yesterday and my 910F (which is set up as a 7 wood) just totally blew it away (my best shot with the RBZ was only 5 yards more than the 910F and the latter was totally dead straight; in general I had a hard time hitting the 4 wood).  Looked at the specs for the RBZ and the lie is 59* and shaft length is 43.5".  I'm figuring that I would have to cut it 1-1.5" to make it hit properly (given that I hit a 41.5" 5 wood); doubt I would buy one because I love my Titleists.

About 2 months ago I tried a Cobra AMP driver and struggled to hit it but could swing away with my shortened Burner (I have a Winn Lite Dri Tac grip on it).

I've also have had to shorten an Adams Tight Lies fairway by an inch for it to hit properly.

Why is when the pros are using 44.5-45 inch drivers and when even Jim McClean recommends the same (for that matter, Don Trahan even recommends 43.5 or 44"), that the vendors (mainly TM, Adams and Cobra) are promoting insanely long clubs that are hard to control for the average golfer?

Titleist has managed to keep their drivers at 45" basically forever (stock length for a 975D is same as for a 910D2).

Answer
Hi Lou, it's been awhile.  Glad to hear you're still tinkering with and fine-tuning your game.  Ping began the war on length when they changed the specs on their irons by making them a club longer and a club stronger, then boasting they had the longest irons.  Other than a little attention to control, all manufactures of balls and clubs are intent on establishing themselves as having the product that goes the farthest.  It's what sells.  Personally I don't agree with it and continue to use mostly Titleist products with the original specs.  I am however, playing the Krank Rage driver which has won the last several long drive contests.  I don't benefit from all the length gimmicks cause my swing speed is below the magicical 100 mph.  The club comes with the Winn Lite Dri Tac grip to keep the overall weight down to maximize club head speed.  I replaced it with a Lampkin Tour Wrap because when Winn grips get the least bit of moisture on them, it's like pouring oil on them.  That and they don't last long at all.

It is good to hear from you, keep swinging.

John
