picking teams by throwing balls

Question
Our foursome usually picks two-man teams by throwing balls.The two players whose balls land closest to each other become a team. Does it make a difference whether we throw 4 balls or only 3? Thanks.

The probabilities are the same, regardless whether you throw 3 balls or 4 balls. So, if you have someone late to the tee, you can just throw 3 balls.
