Question
QUESTION: The message format at Facebook is so hokey that trying to write a message almost slows my home computer to a crawl.

I have a photo of the full golf set on my profile.

My basic setup now is a Burner HT loft draw driver (I have been hitting it around 230-240 yards lately) and 7 wood (last game I teed off with it and hit it 225 yd - about 40 yards more than my normal shot), Adams Tight Lies 9 wood (I did the reshaft myself to TT Lite XL), Louisville HL3 34 deg hybrid, Ping Eye 2 8-PW yellow dot irons, Vokey Spin-Milled 54-11 c-c and 60-07, White Hot 7H putter. So what I have here is 3 clubs (7W 9W 34H) that do the job of the 3-7 irons.

The "nice to have handy" sticks are an R7 3 wood, Vokey Spin Milled 58-12 c-c and 64-07 wedges and a 2 way chipper.

Here's the oddity.... I hit the Ping Eye 2 8 iron 3 yards farther than either the Eye 2 or DCI 981 7 irons. The 8 iron is apparently a Dynamic Gold X flex shaft (the label has what looks like part of an X).  The rest of my Ping irons are KT-M stiff and the Titleists are Dynamic Gold regular with Sensicore.  So how is that I am hitting what is supposedly an X flex club farther than a 7 iron with a lighter stiff shaft or a regular flex? Defies all conventional wisdom.  The 9 iron has a 15 yard gap (expected because the loft between it and the 8 iron differs by 5 deg) and I have 10 yards between the 9 and PW.  I know that on short irons there isn't a lot of diff between the flexes but it is more apparent on the longer irons and the woods.

ANSWER: Hi Lou:

Sounds like you need a clubfitting expert.  You need to know exactly what that shaft flexes at.  The label means nothing.  What it says on the shaft itself means nothing.  Go to a respected club repair guy in your area and get the shaft tested.  My advice is whatever that shaft really is, is what you want your other clubs to be also.  If you've never done that, it's eye opening.  Find out the length of the club, the true loft and then what the shaft truly is (flex wise).  It might surprise you.

QUESTION: I think I'll pay Jesse (at Fairway Golf on Convoy St) a visit. Highly recommended if you go in the San Diego area. I've had him do a couple sets of irons and a putter and tweak a few others. I've learned my lesson about the importance of proper lie angles.

Another case in point about the shaft not being the same flex as marked is my driver.  The shaft says "M" (Taylor Made version of senior flex). I hit it dead straight and average about 230-240 yards and have hit 270 on a couple occasions. It has been shortened to 45" (the previous owner must've did that). Doesn't feel whippy at all. Probably the best driver I've ever owned.

I've hit a 975 driver with Light Regular and a Burner 3 wood with senior flex and both of them exhibited a push-slice. I've also hit a Burner 5H with M flex and pulled it quite a bit.

Answer
Lou:

Can't express enough the importance of finding a good club fitter / repair man that you trust.  Worth their weight in gold.  There is so much crap out there of guys just trying to pedal their crap.  Very few good ones who really know what they are talking about and can help you.
