Inside-Out Swing

Question
First, thank you for your time..I will try to be short and specific.
I am a better player between 4 and 9 handicap. (I do get lessons.) Posture and grip are in great position. Backswing is strong maybe slightly below plain but gets back on plain just past hip high..So, I unknowingly created a swing flaw over 2 years doing the "pump drill" which has inadvertently has caused me to be way to far inside on my downswing (club behind me, hands return outside of address position) and has destroyed the needed rotation for my lower and upper body, by only thinking of that one move. This move gets me incredibly stuck and I have to lift, which keeps my weight back.I do not flip after impact my ball flight starts right and keeps that line or draws slightly.. Divots point right and lots of dropkicks with my driver. So severity can stay in the proper perspective, my scores are 37-41 on 9 holes..I'm 25 years old and getting worse. I have not had lessons for 2 years before this summer. I'm with what I think is a great teacher, but I have not really received any drills for this rotation problem...So thats what I'm looking for. A drill two...But any advice you can pass along would greatly be appreciated...Thanks again

Answer
Paul,

You have describe your issue very well. I would like to see a video of your swing which enables me to see it all, but since I can't,  let me give you some advice anyway.

To counter the inside out down swing and getting stuck try the following. Take a three quarters backswing. During the down swing, try to get the butt of the club pointed to the middle of the body. This will release the club properly and avoid getting stuck behind you.

The other thought that I want you to have is swinging the club to "left field". In the beginning it will feel like you're coming over the top but take some video and you'll see the truth. I want you to do this so you can get the club moving back to the inside after contact.

If neither of the above works, get with your teacher and address this situation. You seem to manage this flaw and still score well. Imagine what you can do with a slightly inside to inside down swing.

Good luck,

Michael Hoffman
