hitting wedge shots off the heel of the club

Question
I am a fairly solid ball striker and a decent player. (index of 5.0) Lately i have noticed that when hitting full wedge shots im am hitting them in off the heel of the club and pull cutting them. If i go up to a 9iron or even my pitching wedge i go back to hitting the ball in the center of the face. I can seem to figure out what the problem is. Any help or drills to work this problem out would be appreciated. It isnt bad enough to be a shank but they are just not solid shots.

Answer
Paul,

Sorry for the delay.

This is an interesting question. My first thought is that your wedge may be too upright. This would force the contact to be toward the heel of the club. Take your set of clubs to a golf shop and have them check the lie angles of your irons.

The other possibility is that your a little quick with the wedge at the top, starting your down swing with your hands creating the pull and the heel contact. Try to be more patient in your transition and see if this helps.

If it's not one of the two above follow up with me and we'll try again.

Good luck,

Michael Hoffman
