Achieving Consistent Divot Depth for Improved Iron Shots
Question
I hit my irons fairly well usually and I'm pretty consistent at hitting the ball straight. I understand the concept of hitting down on the ball and i do it but I cant control the depth of my divot to get that nice bacon strip divot. Any suggestions on improving my divot consistency and to improve my ball striking? I am 13 with a 5 handicap. Thanks
Answer
Hi Zach:
Yes, simply put, swing the club more forward towards your target instead of down. The downward part of the swing (sometimes called the downswing) is taken care of because you tilt forward from the hips at address. If you swing the club more down at the ball, you'll go too deep. But if you swing the club more forwards towards the target (where you want it to go anyways), your divots will shallow out. Keep playing Zach, you have a promising career.
