careers in golf

Question
Hello, I am currently a junior in high school and a 4 handicap. I really want to have a carreer in golf, but i have a few questions. Would you be able to support a family with a job in the golf business? Also, could you give me a few careers you could have in the golf business?

                                              Thanks,
                                               Eric

Answer
Dear Eric, thanks for the questions. The Golf business can be a very rewarding but like many others, not without it's hard work.  Almost every career in golf has the potential to support a family if you're willing to put in the time and effort.  The more obvious career is to be a professional (PGA Member.)  There are two types...those you see on tv on tour (touring professional)...and those that run local clubs, known as club professionals.  As a club professional, you can do very well, but will likely pay many years of dues first as an assistant.  Other careers include Course Superintentent...they completely care for the course and grounds.  (Requires a special degree in college...golf turf management) Another is a Golf Representative...these guys represent companies such as Ping, Ashworth, Callaway and sell their products to golf shops to sell to golfers.  There are literally countless careers in the business.  I would suggest you google GOLF-CAREERS and look the responses over thoroughly to see what you might like.  Also, getting a job at a course (on the range, or locker room, or in the shop) can really teach you about the business and at the same time allow you the resources (range, teachers) to really work on your game.  At your age, this is a great way to check it out, from the insiders view.  Good luck, thanks again for asking and remember...

Love the game,
skipper
