How to become a head golf pro

Question
My husband is looking for a career change.  He has been playing golf since he was 5 yrs old.  He has always talked  on numerous times about wanting to go back to school to become a head golf pro. He has no idea where to start looking for schools at.  We live in Western North Carolina.  Are they any way that you could recommand a school or guide us to a website with this information. Also What kind of degree/cert. is it?  Please get back with me.
Thanks
Melissa

Answer
Dear Melissa, thanks for the question.  There are a few ways to become what is known as a Class A PGA Club Professional.  The most well-known method is the apprentice program.  Basically you get seek a full-time position under a current Head Pro as his/her assistant.  They advise you about the requirements from the PGA to become Class A. (multiple classes, players ability test etc.) Over time, you earn your Class A status and are eligible to be hired as a Head Professional.  For more information about this route, I would advise your husband to stop in at a local club or make an appt. with a local Pro and ask him about this program...he may even know who might be hiring in his "section." (A section is how the PGA breaks down the country.)

The other route to becoming Class A Pro is through an affiliated college program.  Incidentally the best one in the country is in Fayetteville, NC (I'm biased, my nephew is there now)...it is called Methodist University Golf Program.  This is a four-year college that not only earns you PGA Status, but your degree (in whatever) as well.  Of course, this is just like going to college, but majoring in golf management...so the costs are very high as you can imagine.  On the other hand, the job placement when you graduate is unparalelled.  Check them out at: http://www.methodist.edu/pgm/  Both can feel like a long haul, but if its his passion, the time will fly.  Good luck, thanks again, and remember...

Love the game,
skipper
