how do i fix my fade?

Question
hey Matthew
my name is Shaun, i am 13 and i allways fade my driver why is that? Even when i take a slow backswing it fades and when i try and hit it hade it fades heeps. I have tried to fix it my self by starting with my club face closed and it ends up as a slice. So can you please tell me what im doing wrong?

Shaun

Answer
Hi Shaun, firstly don't be put off by hitting a fade, Faldo used one all his career and won 6 majors, Monty plays with a fade all the time too.It offers the most control over the ball than a draw, but if it turns into a slice then you have problems! Generally a fade is an out to in swing path (clubs swings to the left of the target), with a clubface that is slightly open to the path but closed to the target, a slice is the same path but a clubface that is open to the target as well, ie aiming right. The reason it happens more with a driver is because you hit the ball more towards the middle of the ball instead of at the bottom like you would with an iron, hence you will create more side spin and less back spin, giving you a curved ball flight. It is always cause and effect when it comes to hooks and slices. My advice is to see your local PGA Pro, or buy or borrow a book called "The only golf leson you'll ever need" by Hank Haney, read it and you'll start to understand what is happening.

Good luck, Matt
