cold weather

Question
Is there a rule of thumb as to the amount of distance lost as the weather gets to 50 deg., 40 deg. etc.? I am a 13 handicap from the white tees at my home course. Driver carry avg. 190 to 200 yards. 5 iron carry 150 to 155 and play primarily Titleist nxt or dt/solo. Many thanks

Answer
Hi Pat,

Every 6 degrees Farhenheit warmer yields an additional yard of carry OR you get an additional 1.6 yards for each 10 degree increase in temperature.

This assumes the ball speed off of the club. If the ball itself is much cooler, it won't spring off the club face as well and the ball speed will be less, thus even less distance.

When playing in the cold, therefore, you should keep your golf balls warm. Start out with 3 balls at room temperature or up to 100 degrees F. Keep them in your pocket to stay warm. Play one ball on one hole, then put it in your pocket and use one of the warm balls. Rotate through the balls every 3 holes.

Hope this helps.
