Question
I want to buy a wedge or two for my teenage daughter. She is 16 and about 26 handicap, plays on the high school golf team and is improving quickly. Do I need to have her fitted or are wedges more one size fits all? Do you have any brand preferences?

thanks
david dawson

Answer
Greetings Mr. Dawson

I'm so happy to hear that your daughter is doing so well with her golf game, and being a part of a team effort as well!

Wedges....we are now approaching the precision part of the game. This becomes a very personalized decision of what wedge to use and how many to carry. Some pros, depending on the venue, may carry 3 wedges, whereas other pros at the same venue may carry 2. Bottom line....it all depends on what distance "gaps" are needed when one is coming closer to the target.

The most common wedges are numbered 52, 56 and 60, and/or referred to (52)gap (approach), (56)sand, and (60)lob wedge, respectively.

So the above information is a good start for reference, but also not an absolute. As your daughter improves her course management, she will get a better sense and feel for what is needed for her individual game. Because most clubs are designed to fit the majority of golfers, your daughter should be dandy with her choices. However, it doesn't hurt to get a quick, second "look" from a local PGA/LPGA Professional.

Best of luck with you and your daughter's journey towards better golf. Just remember...keep it fun and simple!

Regards

Ruth Ann Allen, PGA
