ladies vs mens golf clubs

Question
hi,
I am looking to buy a set of golf clubs for my wife, a newcomer to golf. Do you think it is worthwhile buying women's clubs for her vs buying men's clubs? Is there really a difference? She is about the same height as me and therefore could use regular sized clubs.
thanks
Answer
Greetings GFB,
I am so glad to hear that your wife has caught the golfing "bug". Being a golfer yourself, I am sure you can relate to the mysterious fact that there's something that always brings you back for more.
As far as equipment, the length of a men's golf club is about 1/2"-1" longer than a ladies. Because your wife is about the same height as you, a men's length may be ok for her. The shaft flex will be the greatest difference however, with the ladies club being much more flexible. A ladies club is lighterweight as well. She may have the natural strength or athleticism to comfortably swing a men's club. These dynamics play an important role in generating clubhead speed.
A couple of suggestions GFB, would be to have a qualified PGA Professional take a look at how she stands at the ball. Though she may be as tall as you, she'll stand at the ball differently, and a ladies length might be ok. He'll/She'll be able to make some suggestions to best suit your wife. Also, a good start for her would be taking lessons, either through some clinics (a nice economical way to be introduced to the game), or one-on-one private lessons.
Well GFB, I hope I've answered your question and/or given enough information to get a good start for both you (looking to buy), and your wife (looking to play). Best of luck, and Happy Holidays!
Regards.
