Avalanche Controller

2016/7/22 11:04:28

Question
Sir, I am attending college right now and am weighing options for future careers. Right now I am enrolled in the Virginia Military Institute and majoring in Physics. I was wondering what kind of a chance someone like me would be able to become an avalanche controller. I've been researching for a bit, trying to find what kind of salary the job provides and what exactly the job entails. As of now, I am a fully certified EMT, an Eagle scout, experienced skier, and love cold weather and the mountains more than anything. If you have any information on the subject, I would greatly appreciate any input you may have.

Answer
Hey Nick,

I would recommend that you start by becoming a ski patroller and work your way up to avalanche control. They offer a variety of classes and they are the ones that do all the 'controlling' within the boudaries of ski areas. Becoming a professional ski patroller has many benefits and can be a very rewarding job.

Best of luck.
Hope this helps.
Keep on skiing,
