I am not sure I understand your question but will try and help. If you want to be a part of your high school diving team, I do not know how you would make the varsity team as an 'independent diver' There is a term used in club diving called being 'unattached'. A diver in this status has come from one club team to another and therefore must compete unattached for certain amount of time (say 3 months) before they can represent their new team.
So it is possible to be unattached (or independent) but I do not think it applies to high school diving. If you want to re-phrase your question with more information, please feel free to ask a follow up question with exactly what it is you want to do in diving.
