Question
Hello all. I am a young swimmer and i am seeking to make states. As of right now, i can swim a 34.6 which is 0.6 seconds away from making states. My last meet is coming up and i would really like to qualify. So my question is this: How can i increase my speed quickley? My flip turn is fast, but has not yet reached its full potential. I think where i can burn the most time is on my start. However i freak out whenever i step on the block. I guess what im also asking is this. How can i improve my start. and also not get nervous before a meet. Still getting an adrelaine rush?

Thanks so much for all your help. Please respond as soon as you can! Thanks again.

First of all, make sure your streamline out of that turn is tight and aggressive, if you can get out past the flags before you take that first stroke(with no breath on the first stroke), you can pick up a little time.
As for the nervousness, use it to your benefit.  Realize that you have done the work, so there is nothing to stress about.  If you have worked hard, then you can reward yourself by having fun and swimming fast, no pressure!
Since I haven't seen your start, the best advice I can give is work on reaction time(getting off the block as quick as possible) and a good streamline and kick underwater, then take that first stroke like you mean to go fast(aggressive) and no breath on the first stroke.
Lastly, NO FEAR, NO FREAKOUT, think positive, use the nervousness(adrenaline) to your benefit and go fast.
Hope this helps,
George
