back strength

Question
Hi Leo,
Cool tips and swim history!  I was wondering about your thoughts on back strength because I've been swimming for 14 yrs myself, and I can see that my back has become disproportionally strengthened as a result.  It's like those millions of swim strokes have made me strong at straight arm pulldowns and such, but other aspects of my back are lagging, especially my rhomboids? Is this common for a swimmer and do you have any tips? thx!

Answer
seems pretty normal, its typical to develop a strong back and lats for swimmers. I don't imagine your rhomboids are weak, thy also develop with swimming.
If you are concerned about weak rhomboids I would suggest supplementing your swim workouts with somw weight training. Here's a link that came up on a search: http://www.myfit.ca/exercisedatabase/search.asp?muscle=Rhomboids

good luck
