getting faster

Question
I'm in high school and have been swimming all my life, but not on any teams. The first time i was on a team was four years ago but i got some assurance and decided to join in my senior year. Anyway, I know and feel that I can go faster at the 50yd race but it seems as if my body is just pulling me back from reaching the next level. I do not get exhausted after a race so i know i have a swimmer's heart. In my last race i go a 27.40 in the 50, pretty good for a rookie huh? I know I have what it takes but need some help in getting faster. Please respond soon and thank you.

Answer
Good to hear you joined a team, that's the first step in really becoming a fast swimmer. For the 50 the most important things are good technique and explosion. It takes time and effort to develop into a good sprinter. You should set intermediate goals for yourself, it seems like you want too much too quickly, but becoming a fast swimmer is a slow process. You should watch top swimmers on video and study their stroke, and read articles about swimming technique online. Then work on your stroke in the pool, and develop your kick and rotation, kick more than anything is the key to fast freestyle, and also work on your pull of course.
