Lap swimming rut

2016/7/15 11:59:36

Question
Hi Eric, I'm 42 and never swam on a team or with a group.  I gave up jogging b/c of foot problem - and have been swimming for about 7 yrs as my main exercise.  I always swim the same workout - 2000 meters freestyle w/o stopping in about 42 minutes.  I'm swimming about 8-10,000 meters/wk.  I'm addicted to swimming - but in a rut.  Any suggestions to improve my workout in a similar timeframe?  Thanks for your help!

Answer
Dan,
I think that you answered your question early on.  Try swimming with a team or group.  Or, at least try getting some workouts from an alternate source.  It's great that you are addicted to swimming.  Sometimes I wish I was more addicted to swimming.  It's just that you might need to "shake it up" a bit.

Try some of the following sites.  They all have great resources for workouts:

http://ruthkazez.com/50swimworkouts.html

http://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/swim-cgi/

http://www.swimmingpracticeplans.com/oi/workouts.html

I think that the key to any workout plan is keeping it fun and interesting.  I don't blame you for being in a rut.  It just sounds like you need something to break the monotony.  Swimming with other people, getting a coach, and/or using someone else's workouts are all great ways to break the rut.

I hope that this helps.  Please let me know if you have any more questions.
Eric
