Question
Hi,Whenever I'm in the water I get a little apprehensive because I'm not a good swimmer. Whenever I try to swim or tread water it feels as if I can't get enough air. I think that this is due to a near drowning incident I had years ago. I would like some advice on how I can overcome this problem. Thanks

Answer
Jack --

Well, the easiest way to overcome a fear of the water is to take swimming lessons.  There are adult lessons available at many pools (with qualified instructors) and it always helps to know you're not the only one with a fear of the water.  (And believe me, you're NOT alone.)  If taking lessons isn't feasible for you, then I would say to start with learning to float.  Start out in shallow water, floating on your back (so you can breathe easily).  Once you're comfortable with this, try floating on your stomach and holding your breath, also in shallow water.  If you can master these two skills, it should be easier to move into the deep water.

I hope this information is helpful -- if you have any more questions, I'd be glad to help or clarify anything I've said today.  Good luck!
