Boscastle Flood Prevention: Measures Taken Since 2004

Since the 2004 Boscastle flood, extensive work has been done to prevent future flooding in the town. This has involved a combination of engineering and environmental measures, such as:

- Building new flood defences, including a 2.5-metre high flood wall and reinforced embankments along the River Valency.

- Improving the capacity of the River Valency to carry floodwater by widening and deepening the river channel and installing debris screens to prevent blockages.

- Creating a new flood storage area upstream of the town to reduce the volume of water entering Boscastle during heavy rainfall.

- Planting trees and vegetation to help stabilise riverbanks and reduce the speed of water flow.

- Developing a flood warning system to alert residents and businesses in advance of potential flooding.

- Raising awareness of flood risks and encouraging local people to take steps to protect their properties.

These measures have been effective in reducing the risk of flooding in Boscastle, and have helped to protect the town from further damage.
