weight training and swimming

Question
Hello Eric,

I have been doing moderate lifting and swimming because I love it. My main problems are usually with lower back tightness and shoulder fatigue. Now I am not tall and don't have a great distance per stroke. Thought weights might help out. The workouts usually involve high rep light weights but I was wondering what I should stay away from and focus more on in the weight room to ultimately advance my swimming. This is in response to a former question you answered about weights shortening the muscles rather than keeping them long and lean. Can you help me out? Thank you.

Answer
Chad,
This is not easy to answer without actually observing you.  However, I would say that high reps and light weights is a good start.

Muscles to concentrate on for swimming:  Abs, Triceps, Shoulders.

Muscles not needed as much for swimming:  Biceps, Chest.

Really I would try and do more endurance type work with surgical tubing and medicine balls.  These will also work your stabilizing muscles.  Don't think of going to the gym for weights.  Think of going to the gym to work out.  Do total body exercises that incorporate multiple muscle groups.

Again, this is probably not the most in-depth answer, but I think that you should talk to a trainer at the gym.  They can give you some pointers on what types of exercises will fit this criteria.

Best of luck.
Eric
