Breast Stroke

Question
I'm taking swimming, and I get get the breast stroke straight. Could you give me some techniques or maybe websites?
And maybe for the butterfly stroke too (do you know what I mean with that? That is how we call it in Canada.)
Thanks Sarah

Answer
Sarah-
The key to both the breast stroke and the butterfly is timing.  Breast is also a matter of streamlines, you need to try to keep your knees narrow on your kick, the hands on the other hand need to sweep just past your shoulders before pulling back and around.  When you breath try to think about pushing your chin forward rather than lifting it up.  During the stroke, when your hands go forward think about taking a 1 or 2 count glide, this gives your kick a chance to finish.  When you glide really try to stretch everything together in a strong streamline position.
In butterfly(that's what it's called here too), timing is even more important.  We'll start with the kick--it should be a very smooth dolphin kick(which you probably already know).  A good drill to work on this is to do the kick on your back, this helps to work on both phases of the kick, the upward part as well as the down kick.  The arms are basically the same as in freestyle, the only difference is that the elbows don't bend quite as much.  Really concentrate on the finish of each stroke, this helps to SWING  the hands around, try to not force your hands to the front.  When the hands get in front, as in t;he breast stroke, let the hands hesitate for just a little, this helps the kick finish and lets the hips come up(this helps keep the stroke fairly flat instead of a lot of up and down motion).  When you breath in butterfly, really try to start pushing your chin forward right when you start your pull with your hands.  This may feel awkward at first, but as it gets more natural it actually puts your breath at the right time with the rest of your stroke.
I hope this helps and isn't too confusing.  If you have any more questions please feel free to ask.
Good Luck,
George
