Moves

Question
I'm a bigger size kid and I wrestle 160, 172, and 205.. I shoot a lot and Didnt
know if their are a couple moves that you think I should work on to get ready for
high school wrestling.  I shoot and then a lot of times I end up trapped on the
bottom, I try to pick up the single or double and finish but sometimes the kids
are just to big to finish it with, do you suggest any other moves that include
shooting and don't get my stuck underneath?

Answer
first of all getting stuck underneath is not the shots' fault.  when you shoot, do you go down to both of your knees? if the answer is yes, then that's the problem.  you're taught shots because they are basic and they always work if done correctly.
so lets break it down, to start with your head has to stay up.  getting cross-faced should be a distant second priority to getting the take down. if you shoot and finish properly, there shouldn't be an opportunity for the guy to cross face you anyway. so try and focus on that first of all.  second, you have to keep running your feet.  your legs are the strongest muscles in your body, you have to use them.  if you try and lift a guy with your back, you'll lose that battle more times than you win.  so it all comes back to your basics.
the thing with big guys is they think that all the things the little guys do won't work for them. but the thing is, it works for everyone, with few exceptions. certain body types would better be suited for certain styles, but don't let that convince you that you're better trying or not trying certain things. try everything, and figure out what works and doesn't work that way.  but back to topic.  big guys specifically, underhooks, i've always done underhooks, they're second nature to me so i seem to use them out of habit more than anything else.  but they've always worked well because most people don't feel comfortable when you have an underhoo in on them.  so if you're making the guy uncomfortable then you're already well on your way to scoring. so give that a try.  another tool that i've started to use is youtube. go and look up some good wrestlers' names and type them in, college wrestlers and olympic style.  watch and learn.  good wrestlers borrow from other wrestlers, great ones steal outright.
