I've been training in brazilian jiujitsu, but my standup game is practically non-existant.

Answer
Ken,

Since you are new to the sport at 20, there is a world of technique to learn in comparison to other wrestlers that have started at a much younger age. However, your new interest in the sport will keep you going well into your prime as the advantage here is that you are no where near being "burnt out" having been in the sport as a middle-schooler, and now are no longer interested in the intense training regimen. As for a good standup, I recommend  relentless back pressure which is basically keeping your back against your opponent (like a strong magnet) when attempting a standup escape. Lift your outside knee (opposite side away from your opponent) then like a motorcycle kickstand, extend your leg, lifting your hips (as if trying to pee on the ceiling, and keeping constant back pressure, make your backward pressure and your opponent's forward pressure to force you to your feet. The important fine point is to maintain contact with your opponent and control one of his hands in order to spin and face your opponent for the escape. The key point is to always make your opponent carry your weight with good back pressure. Also stay in a human chair position when near standing as this makes you heavier to your opponent and tougher to hold onto. Never allow your opponent to make you stand straight up (as in good posture walking) because you lose your leverage when that happens.
