Flagellants: Clothing and Practices of Medieval Penance

The Flagellants were a Christian sect that practised self-mortification as a form of penance. They whipped themselves with whips or rods called 'disciplines', which were often made of knotted ropes or leather thongs. Flagellants sometimes wore sackcloth or other coarse garments as a sign of their penance.
