Using a kayak to go saltwater fishing is becoming more popular than ever. However, if you don't know a lot about the different types of kayaks it may be a little difficult choosing the one that would be the best for you. There are many different types of ocean kayaks sold on the market today and each one has their own unique features that make them special.

With so many different styles available you need to learn as much as you can about them in order to make a wise decision. There are a lot of things to consider when selecting an ocean kayak for saltwater fishing. There are certain criteria that your ocean kayak should meet in order to provide you with the best service. Some of these are discussed below.

Basic Kayak Designs

There are two main basic designs that are used in the making of kayaks. One type is the kayaks that are designed for the angler to sit on top of the kayak and the other is designed for the angler to sit in the kayak. The "Sit-In Kayak" will provide a little more protection from the elements you will encounter from the ocean but they can also fill up with water when you get caught out in rough conditions. You will need a good pump with this design.

The "Sit-On Top Kayaks" are designed with scupper holes that are made to drain the water from the cockpit. It will drain out on its own and you don't have to worry about using a pump to remove the water. When it comes to where you will sit in your fishing kayak it is really a personal preference. In other words, both styles can be used and it's entirely up to you which type to choose.

There are other features that are more important that you need to consider. For instance, the stability that you have with your kayak is one of the most important features you need to be concerned with. You can't catch fish if you are flipping over everytime you try to reel in a species that is putting up a struggle.

The amount of storage that you have on the kayak is also very important. You need a flat surface for holding equipment such as GPS systems, depth finders or rod holders. You also need storage compartments where you can put your tackle and even some of your personal stuff that you need to take with you on your fishing trips.

The "Sit-On Top Kayaks" tend to have more storage space below the deck so if you need lots of space this style may be your best option. Some of the "Sit-In Kayaks" have hatches built into the hull that gives you access to sealed compartments designed for storage. They usually have enough room in the cockpits for you to store much of your gear.

Performance is very important and something that you need to considered before choosing a kayak. The performance of a kayak includes its maneuverability. The way it performs will determine where you can go fishing. If it's hard to maneuver, then you may miss out on some of the fun and excitement that prompted you to buy the kayak in the first place.
