Where To Go Walleye Fishing In New York State

2016/7/18 17:11:39

In New York State, fishing season for walleyes opens in May and there are some very good places to catch the walleye. Here are some of the places to fish walleye. St. Lawrence River, Oneida Lake, Oswego River, Otisco Lake and Conesus Lake are the best places to go for walleye.

Although there may be others, these are the ones that you will hear anglers talk about the most. Bait shops and local sporting goods stores will tell you that these places are filled with nice sized walleyes. All you need is the gear and the bait to catch yourself some fish for the dinner table.

Conesus Lake is the place to go if you are looking for a good sized walleye. You will want to wear some sunglasses though, because the sun shines bright on the water and with the sunglasses, you will be able to see the big fish better.

It is possible to see some walleye that about twelve pounds. The only problem with this lake is that for some reason the walleye are fussy and a little more of a challenge to catch. This makes the fishing even more exciting.

It is all about the thrill of the catch on Conesus Lake. The best time to go fishing on this lake however is at night. They are catching walleye with a crankbait and trolling.

Nighttime fishing for walleye on Otisco Lake is superb. This lake is in the chain of Finger Lakes. There are so many adult walleye that weight in at five to seven pounds. The best time to fish this area is between May and June.

You can catch the walleye using stickbaits. The lake is also known for its shore fishing which is nice for anglers that do not have access to a boat. You can fish by the rocky shores by the dam on the north end of the lake.

Fishing Oswego River in the lower part is fantastic for walleye fishing. The walleyes that come into the harbor will feed on the baitfish and the alewives. The prime time to fish this area is in May after fishing opens up.

You will see some nice sized walleye coming out of the river. The fishing is the best right after dark and the trolling is the method used. You will see many lanterns and artificial light after dark. You will hear some anglers saying that the best time to fish is from dusk to dawn on the river.

Walleye fishing on Oneida Lake is something to talk about and try. The walleye stay in this area because of the perch hatch back in 2007. The walleye can feed anytime they want. You can fish almost anywhere there are schools of baitfish to hook the walleye.

You can expect to catch a fish weighing about three to four pounds. The best time to fish is early mornings and right after the sunsets.

There is a limit of three walleye per day for the first few weeks after the season opens.
