If you use worms or night crawlers for bait, be sure to thread them securely on your hook. Using the threading technique will help to catch more fish without losing your bait. It is also suggested that you use small hooks for bait like worms and night crawlers.

You need good weather to be able to enjoy your fishing trip instead of becoming angry, frustrated or scared. Make sure to look at a forecast before you head out. Looking at it about a week in ahead of time and the day before is good. If the weather does not look favorable, than go ahead and re-schedule your trip.

A great part of catching fish depends on your skill in convincing the fish to eat your bait. You can try using lures that represent, or copy, the different foods that fish eat. Select bait that behaves in a manner similar to the creatures that fish normally prey upon.

Small-mouth bass like to frequent areas near rocks. Smallmouth bass also seek warmth in shallow waters, so look there during the spring.

The best fish to keep is not necessarily the largest. When fishing, you should release the fish that are older and larger than others. Because it is older, it probably contains more contaminants than smaller fish, making it more dangerous and unhealthy to consume.

Any avid fisherman should have a sharp hook at their disposal. If the hook scratches your nail when it is dragged over it, you have a well sharpened hook. If it doesn't. try sharpening or replacing it prior to catching fish.

Stay very, very quiet when you are trying to catch fish. Excess noise can scare fish away from your area, making it harder to catch them. This doesn't only mean talking loud. Noisy tackle boxes and loud vehicles can scare fish away as well.

Invest in quality when it comes to your fishing equipment. Fishing poles are available everywhere, from big box stores to specialty outdoor shops. Fishing is such a popular pastime that you can buy kid-friendly plastic poles. If you don't buy a high quality rod & reel combo, you won't have good luck fishing. A quality fishing rod and reel can cost between $15 and $35.

If you are impatient, change positions within the area on an hourly basis. This affords you a change of scenery and keeps you awake and aware. Who knows, you may even stumble upon a great fishing spot!

Spot the right area to snag a fish, and then throw your line upstream of that location. That will take your bait and hook past the fish. The downstream drift is going to seem more natural and better attract fish to your lure. This technique is especially effective if the location of the fish is beneath an object that is in the way.
