Tips To Stop Wrist Flip In Your Golf Swing

One of the most common faults with amateur golfers is the wrist flip in their golf swing. There are many terms for it like, casting, releasing angle, premature uncocking of wrists, throwing the club and many others, but the the bottom line is a very inconsistent swing with mishits like thin, bladed, topped and even chunked (fat) golf shots.

Pay Attention To Your Right Wrist

The flip comes from an overactive right wrist. It's a "hit" impulse to use the right hand too early in the swing. The role of the right wrist is to retain the angle as long as possible all the way through impact. This is a very unnatural movement, and seems to go against the act if hitting a golf ball, but I can tell you this is the correct way to come into impact and hit a solid golf shot.

When you get to the top of your swing, think of pulling down with the butt of the club, and you'll soon get the feeling of how your right wrist stays cocked all the way down. And through impact the right hand should feel "on top of the shaft" to you compress the ball and take a divot after the ball.

What you'll find is the right wrist angle stays intact when you're contacting the ball. It just seems more on top of the ball, rather than releasing and becoming straight, which is a very weak way to hit a golf ball.

So whatever wrist cock you get by the time you get to the top of your swing, you MUST keep it as long as possible coming down. One thing I found was that when I relaxed my hands, wrists and even my fingers, the wrist cock actuallly stays in place, because of the weight of the clubhead, and momentum moving forward.

It's when you have tight wrists when you will intinctly release your right wrist angle prematurely. So grip tension plays a critical role in avoiding a flipping of your wrists through impact. Tension also kills swing speed, which dramatically reduces distance with all the clubs in your bag.

Think of swinging a baseball bat. Are you forearms, wrists, hands and fingers tightly gripping the bat? No way! They are totally relaxed, and the bat swings freely for maximum power. That's the same feeling you should have with your golf club. That's also why the golf waggle can really help when you use it in your preshot routine.

Use A Swing Aid To Stop Flipping

Fixing this swing fault can be very difficult, but to stop the golf wrist flip you might want to look at using a golf wrist aid.
