bicycle seat

Question
I am fairly new at riding.  The bike cost around $300.

I notice that after riding  a few miles,I really start to get sore from, I guess, the seat rubbing my crotch.

should I consider a new type of seat or should I try to adjust. it?

Answer
There are a lot of factors that go into riding comfort. proper adjustment, horizontally and vertically is one of them. The rule of thumb for height is you should have a slight bend in your knee when at the bottom of your stroke. For the horizontal adjustment that more an issue of comfort and bike geometry.

There is also a breaking in period for your seat and the bike. This can be a few hundred miles.

Another factor is clothing. If you were regular shorts and underwear that increases chafing. A decent bicycle short with a chamois or gel insert will help a good deal. I always wear bike shorts without underwear when I ride. You can also get bicycle underwear with a gel insert that can be worn under regular clothing.

There are also creams that will help reduce or eliminate chafing.

Check on line bike shops like Bike Nashbar and Performance for clothing and other aids.
