Obscure foul ball question

Hi, I hope you can help me with this.
During our softball game the other day, we had a situation where a hit bounced fair along the first base line, then bounced foul, and then managed to bounce fair again where it was fielded by our first baseman  who tagged the runner.
Was this a foul ball?

It all depends on where this took place in relation to first base...

If the batted ball went fair and then foul and then came back into fair play before it went past 1st base, then it is a fair ball and the batter can be tagged out.

If the batted ball went fair and then foul and then came back into fair play after it passed 1st base, then the batted ball is considered foul.
