touched ball goes out of play

Question
runners on 1st and 2nd and batter hits a line drive over the first baseman's head.  The ball hits the right fielder glove and then gets past him.  the right fielder chases it down in the corner and it rolls out of play.  As it rolled out of play (after the deflection by the defense) the batter was rounding 2nd and the runner that was originally on first is almost home.  I believe after the deflection this becomes the umpires discression as to where he would have thought the runner to safely go? (in our case it was called a ground rule double,  where is this covered in the rule book so I can follow along?)  THANKS  p@

Answer
The rule in the major league rulebook that deals with this is 7.05 (f).  Here's the text:

7.05 Each runner including the batter-runner may, without liability to be put out,
advance?br>
(f) Two bases, if a fair ball bounces or is deflected into the stands outside the first or
third base foul lines; or if it goes through or under a field fence, or through or under
a scoreboard, or through or under shrubbery or vines on the fence; or if it sticks in
such fence, scoreboard, shrubbery or vines;

This is enforced from the start of the play.  So the proper position of the runner would be to place him on 3rd base and the hitter would be on second base.

Hope this helps!
