getting extension through the ball

Question
Willie,

My son is a JV baseball player.  I noticed he is spinning off of the ball when he makes contact instead of getting extension with his arms.  As a result, he is not hitting anything square and hard.  Many of his hits are grounders to the second baseman or pop ups.  He is a lefty.  Any suggustions on drills that we can do?

Thanks

Answer
It could be many reasons for the roll overs. First he could be opening up to early with his hips. This could also cause him to swing around the ball. I would suggest to start having him do one handed drills and focus on hitting the inside of the ball with his too hand. On the finish concentrate on hitting through the ball and finishing with the top hand pointing toward the direction the ball was hit. Make sure there is space between his body and arm. Arm should be fully extended. Try not to roll the wrist. Keep the palm facing up to the sky.
