Fielding for my 8 year old

Hello.  After being able to successfully coach my boy on proper throwing mechanics and some a couple of small hitting issues, I am giving myself a pat on the back.  The problem is (and always has been) fielding mechanics.  Every time a ball is hit to him it is always thumbs up even when it is at his waist, chest, face, or above his head.  Instead of flipping his glove over, he would rather "duck and swipe" at the ball then chase it down.  He catches fly balls Willie Mays style (with a disturbingly high rate of success which makes it harder to coach him on the correct mechanics).  I have even gone so far as to make him get on his knees in catcher position and throw balls (soft plastic ones. I'm not THAT mean) at his chest and face and he still won't flip his glove over.  Any suggestions besides putting a face mask on him and hoping that he grows out of it?  Thanks!

Hey Chris,

Keep hitting ground balls to him over and over again..
Maybe make him do push-ups when he doesn't turn his mitt the right way or when he catches W. Mays style.
This is NOT a good way to catch a fly ball at all.
I never had anyone with this kind of problem.. He may have to learn the hard way in game play.
I just hate to see him waste all that practice time with you.
Tell him that you can't continue to practice with him, if he is practicing the wrong way.
Is there any coach or older brother that he looks up to, that would back you up. Go to him.
