Baseball Coaching Rules: Coach Positioning Behind Home Plate & Backstop
Question
Can a coach stand behind the homeplate umpire, behind the backstop while the opposing team is pitching? Rule ref?
Answer
Stacy,
Coaches are not allowed behind the umpire during a game. Depending on the ruleset used, the rule may be in a different place. However, I will give you the rules from the Official Baseball Rules:
3.17 Players and substitutes of both teams shall confine themselves to their team抯 benches unless actually participating in the play or preparing to enter the game, or coaching at first or third base. No one except players, substitutes, managers, coaches, trainers and bat boys shall occupy a bench during a game.
