catcher position

Question
My sons high school coach would like to try and turn my son into a catcher whichn he has never done. He is currently in the ninth grade and the varsity coach was watching our American Legion game the other day and actually made the suggestion to the legion coach. Is it possible to become a catcher at this age( 14 1/2 ) yrs old after never doing it before. Thanks

Ron,
Unless your son is showing some signs of prominence at another position, I see no reason why he shouldn't give catching a shot.  He is certainly young enough to learn a new position and if the varsity coach see's something in your son, he should at least give it a try.  If it doesn't work out, he can always go back to the position he prefers.

One thing you might want to relay on to your son for motivational purposes is that good catchers are worth their weight in gold.  Catching is one of the few positions where a coach will sacrifice hitting for defense.  If your son makes himself a polished catcher he will make himself a lot more attractive to college coaches and professional scouts.  If he's an above average defensive catcher who can hit a lick, he becomes an immediate prospect.
