to start a double play on first

im a first baseman and am wondering how to start a double play the fastest and easiest way to get it to the shortstop to turn it

If the ball is hit away from first base, simply field it and throw to 2nd (which side of the baseline depends on whether you're fielding the ball on the infield grass, or behind the baseline). Of course, after the throw you need to get back to the bag to complete the double play (unless it's being covered by the 2nd baseman or pitcher). If you field the ground ball in the immediate vicinity of the bag, you should step on the base to get the first out, and then throw to 2nd and yell "tag" to the shortstop so he knows the force has been removed.
