Basketball Terminology Explained: Definitions for Young Players

Question
I'm a high school freshman on a basketball team and have been asked to define certain terms by my coach.  I don't really know what he means, and I'm hoping you might have some suggestions.  here are the terms:

"swing through"

"Power lay-up"

"run-glide"

"step through"

"hands (defensive)"

"lanes"

I'd appreciate any advice you can give me on these terms.

Thanks!

Geoffrey

Answer
Hello Geoffrey!

OK, here goes anyway;

"swing through"- I guess this means flow through to the ball in some sort of offense.

"Power lay-up"- Explode to the glass going up as strong as possible even if you get fouled in order to make a three point play.

"run-glide"- I guess this means when you're on defense, you step and slide your feet while running in order to play good defense.

"step through"- When you get screened, you need to step over and through the block.

"hands"- get your hands up on defense.

"lanes"- when you run a fast break there are three lanes. Down the middle and the two outside lanes. That way you spread the court and create opportunities for a score.

Hope that helps,
