How to be a great safety.

Question
Hello. I live in germany and found a nearby adult football team to join. In high school I played DE, but I at 6ft2, 200 I am one of the smaller guys on the team, even though I lift weights quite a bit.

I am also one of the fastest, and would like to play free safety, unfortunately I do not know what it entails other than the basics. What do I need to do to be a great free safety?
Any resources, websites, suggestions, or anywhere that I can get information would be extremely appreciated.

Answer
Hello,

I apologize for the slow response.

A free safety is the last line of defense. His first responsibility is the pass. No receiver should get deeper than the free safety. A free safety needs to be able to get from sideline to sideline when the ball is thrown. He must also be able to come up and make a tackle. On pass plays, his key read is the quarterback. One thing I tell guys who want to play free safety for me is, you must understand what an offensive coordinator is trying to do with passing routes. especially when the defense is in a zone.
