WR/speed drills

Question
hi my names Ryan im going into 9th grade next football season and im going to be playing JV football.the past few years i went back and forth between TE and FB but now were moving to the spread offense under a new coach so theres no Fb in our offense im not a very good blocker so i dont want to play TE. i come from a town with smaller people in it and im 5'4 155 so im bigger and not as fast as most skill position players. i have really good hands and am good with the football in my hands but i wanna work on my speed and leaping ability without bulking down because i play both offense and defense and i dont want to slim down for defense

Answer
Hi Ryan, first and foremost I suggest talk to your coach and make sure you do the drills and workouts that he has in place for you.

Some of the best workouts you can do for speed and leaping ability include plyometric drills (you can find a bunch on the web), and squat workouts that work your hamstrings and your gluteus maximus muscles.  There is nothing wrong with a little jump rope as well.

Again, I would make sure you talk to either the varsity coach and see if he has a specific workout regime for the entire program, or at least your J.V. coach to see what he has in mind.

If that doesn't help, let me know and we can get into specifics.

Coach B.
