Getting into University level Hockey

2016/7/16 9:36:58

Question
Hi Dina,

I have never played at a very competitive level (highest I played was A level hockey in midget) but I want to make my university's varsity women's hockey team. I have the love of the sport as well as good specific knowledge about the game. We're an average school from a low-competitive league. I'm confident in my ability to make it but I feel as if I'm disadvantaged having never played very competitive levels of hockey.

I'm wondering what you recommend I do to best prepare before I go to tryouts in September. I have a workout routine going, but I really want to know what goes into a coaches evaluation of a player and how I can stand out from the crowd. I'm a good player and can play either forward or defence.

Answer
Hi Leah,
Congrats on taking a very ambitious step to further your hockey career. You should get in touch with the coaches now. The college season is wrapping up and then recruiting will start. At least by talking to the coach you will learn if your position is in demand, if you can "walk-on", and what you can do over the summer to prepare for a try-out if allowed. The coach might be interested and have you send a video or come watch you play.
