Cold Feet

Question
My son is 10 years old and plays rep level hockey. When practicing for over an hour, his feet get extremely cold to the point that he is in tears when he come off the ice.  Can you suggest anything that would help keep his feet warmer during long practices? If we don't find a solution, I think that he will just quit playing.

Answer
George,

Thank you for writing me.  Several years ago, (1977) I took a U8 team from Houston Texas to Chicago and we got the ever loving shifting sand kicked out of us.  Why?  Because our kids were not prepared to play in that facility in the Chicago weather.  In all the games, ALL of the players including ALL of the coaches had their feet frozen that they couldn't wait for the game to end.

During the hand shake, I asked one of the other coaches how their kids were able to stand the cold, because our feet hurt so bad.  He said..."We use baby powder in our skates!"  So I said, baby powder? And he said yeap, it keep the feet from sweating and thus keeps the feet dry so the the feet sweat doesn't freeze.  Wow!  So from then on, when we traveled into cold places, we always take our baby powder....go figure!

I hope this helps and I wish you and your family a Happy New Year!
