Workout

Question
Martial
Can you critique this 'hockey conditioning' workout for me and offer any other suggestions? Also, I am 55 and fairly overweight, mostly in the abdomen and am looking to and keep my back limber as I am bus driver.
If there was more ice time I would be out there instead, and winters are getting so mild up here in Canada pond ice and outdoor rinks are good maybe a month if that. I work nights so thats a no go but weekends I help coach. I plan to workout before I go to work in the afternoon.
I recently bought a used basic multi gym and a manual treadmill.
I thought I would run fast on the treadmill for a minute. Kind of like skating hard. Is this too long or short an interval? If I walk for long periods my knees and feet start to complain. BTW I have real good, padded running shoes.
Run is immediately followed by 25 cable pullups, then run again to  pull downs, run again to leg collar pulls. I chose these as I dont want to make the muscles bigger I just want to get them oiled up and working, and I can feel these particular exercises pulling on my lower back.
Thanks!

Answer
Hello Barry...  I hear ya!  I just passed 50 a few years ago and alot of things are starting to head south!! LOL!

So we must stay active indeed.

I believe you have the right idea with your "short" high intensity workout intervals...  this definitely emulates playing hockey and makes for a good workout that the body can endure with less stress.

I think so many athletes actually hurt themselves when they STRESS themselves...  (There is a difference between stress and exertion...) --  whenever we don't feel right or good about doing something that is stress --  and the stress makes the activity negative.   A big key to ANY workout for me is to ENJOY it!  Do things you enjoy ...  obviously we love playing hockey and it would be great to be able to PLAY more...  our good "joy" pherimones get activated and that does more for our mind and body than some hard sweaty torturous workout!!

Have you checked for "stick" times with your local rinks?  You know where you can just pay like $10 and "drop in" to a time where it's basically pick up hockey??   That may get you a few more hours of hockey in --  and hopefully the guys that show up are loose enough to just play FUN pond hockey style!!

Besides that - I like your workout ...  it's very DOABLE and you can increase your exertion as you get more fit... and you can make it enjoyable with some good music or while watching hockey on TV!!!

Good Stuff Barry...  Have FUN!

Game on!

Thanks
